Why Product Design?

'Design and Technology is about making things that people want and that work well. Creating things is hugely exciting: it is an inventive, fun activity.' James Dyson

This subject will provide you with opportunities to develop your practical skills, knowledge and understanding of the way products are designed, made and manufactured. The subject requires initiative, creativity, determination but most importantly the desire to develop even better solutions to meet the needs of clients. The course will also relate to and require understanding of core Mathematics and Science principles. The skills which Product Design will equip you with are highly sought after in the world of work and university.

Course Type: A Level
Exam Board: AQA
Specific Entry Requirements:
Grade 5 in GCSE English or Maths
Grade B/6 or above in a GCSE Design and Technology subject
Course Assessment:
Students will take Examination 1 (30%), Examination 2 (20%) and complete a Non Examination NEA (50%) towards their final A level qualification.

Course Outline

Examinations x 2

Examination 1: 2.5 hours (120 marks)

  • Based on Technical principles
  • Worth 30% of the course- mixture of short and extended answers

Examination 2: 1.5 hours (80 marks)

  • Based on Designing and Making principles
  • Worth 20% of the course
  • Mixture of short and extended answers
  • Product analysis - worth 30 marks
  • Commercial manufacture- worth 50 marks

Non Examination Assessment (NEA)

Practical application of technical principles, designing and making principles.

How it's assessed
  • Substantial design and make project
  • 100 marks
  • 50% of A Level
Evidence

Written or digital design portfolio and photographic evidence of final prototype.
