Sandwell Academy Big Bandana Bake

Mon, 11 Feb 2019

This year, from Friday 1 March, the charity is kicking off Brain Tumour Awareness Month (BTAM) by baking a difference for everyone affected by brain tumours - with our Big Bandana Bake.

Sandwell Academy were inspired to take part in Big Bandana Bake 2019 after one of our students was diagnosed with a brain tumour last year. All students received a HeadSmart card to increase awareness of the symptoms of brain tumours and a special extracurricular session was also held for Year 7 and 8 to bake cakes, which were then sold in school.

The Brain Tumour Charity know that less than 2% of cancer research funding in the UK is spent on research into brain tumours. For the 11,400 people diagnosed each year, and their family and friends, this isn’t good enough.

Big Bandana Bake aims to raise £200,000, which could fund a researcher and their work into new brain tumour treatments for three years. Only by investing in world-class research can we discover better diagnostic techniques, develop new treatments and, ultimately, find a cure.

Francesca Towson, Head of Community Fundraising at The Brain Tumour Charity, said : “We’re thrilled that Big Bandana Bake is back this March to help raise much-needed funds for research into brain tumours. As only 2% of the hundreds of millions invested in cancer research funding in the UK is spent on brain tumours, the money we’ll raise through this campaign is vital. A cure simply can’t wait.”
